4Bought this half a year ago...May 21, 2010
I have bought this pair of headphones half a year ago. I am re-looking into this to provide a review...

1. Appearance:
The mirror finish is absolutely cool-looking and I am proud to wear this out on the streets. However, this is before the fingerprints stain. Also not scratch-proof.. My heart feels the pain with every scratch I found after half a year.. So you'll have to take absolute care and clean it constantly with the wiping cloth provided.
The head band makes me look even more goofy than I already am, so I adjusted by bending it straight towards the end and now looked so much better.
Build-wise it looks like quality, durable materials and definitely feels more than the price I've paid for.

2. Comfort:
It was very tight for my head, even when I already have a pretty small head. However, after adjusting the band, it was much much better. People wearing glasses will need to note that it gets very uncomfortable and painful after 2 hours or more of wearing it.
Long hours of wearing (I wear it in the office during work) for more than 4 hours makes the ears hot and sweaty. Definitely not for sports. Other than that, comfort is still manageable with a little tweak (i.e., bending the headband).

3. Portability:
Very portable as they fold flat and comes with a draw-string bag, weight-wise this is very light too. The scratch prone finish gives a slight deduction on its portablity though.

4. Sound:
I am not an audiophile and I think this is highly subjective. This is officially my first pair of headphones so I have no others to compare as well.

The bass is very decent and tight, not overpowering but gives the right thud. I rate high for bass as I loathe overpowering bass. Note that at first hear, the bass is very muddy, so burn-in is definitely recommended for this pair. There is no need for a very long burn-in period before you see(hear) the difference.

The sound in general comes out very clear and crisp. It works good most of the time but some of my mp3 at 256kbps vbr hitting a very high note scratched my ears (it does not sound the same with my other bud earphones). The highs in my opinion, comes out a bit too bright at times. The mid-range are excellent, everything came out clear and well-separated. One worthy note is that it makes female vocal stands out really well. I like it especially with my pop songs sung by female singers. Sound stage is reasonable, does not sound too close but not excellent. It makes some songs very colourful and generates addictive sounds, you'll hear more.

I listen to a wide range of music (less of classical and heavy metal), so this works reasonbly well for me with a very good mid-range and bass. Overall this is very good for the given price range.

4Awesome soundMay 12, 2010
I always thought i was a basshead, but this pair of headphones changed the way i look at music. these are amazing sounding, especially after 30 or so hours of use.

the sound is pretty forward, kind of like a grado. maybe a little more bright. but VERY similar. AWESOME for rock, but absolutely GODLY for vocal and bluesy guitar.

i listen to a lot of heavy metal, and that sounds good too.

bass is there, but isnt a basshead's phone. the plucking of a bass guitar string sounds like real life, and a bass drumb hit is pretty impactful. sub-bass is there, but it is a high quality, laid back type of bass to my ears. wouldnt recommend for rap-listeners unless you arent looking for a phone that can pump out bass. if you listen to the beat and want to hear the words more than the bass, this works very well (i listen to some rap)

to my ears, this phone is perfectly balanced. i love it.

comfort is an issue though. after 30 hours or so of having to readjust a lot in order to find a spot where they rest easily and comfortably, i have found that the pads have loosened up (and maybe ive just learned how to wear them) and i have no comfort issues with them unless im wearing glasses, which is only an issue at work. at home i take them off when i listen, isnce i love these phones so much that i close my eyes when i listen to them =)

however, this was not always the case. when i first got the phones, i didnt like them. but i quickly realized that they were good for listening to chuggy metal guitar, bluesy guitar, all vocals from screaming to growling to a soft whispered word, and i found myself grabbing them more often. by the end of the break-in period, which i determined was about 30 hours, not only had i come to appreciate the phones, but they had met me half way, so to speak. the sound had warmed up a little, and the bass is a LOT more present now. when i first got the phones, i would only listen to them with an amplifier, since that was the only way to get ANY bass out of them. now, however, i listen to them straight out of my ipod touch and they sound great, and there is definitely bass present. but like i said, high quality, laid back bass.

if you want to try one, try to find a pair of the lower grado headphones (sr80s)to demo. after burn-in, these are a lot like the sr80s (not burnt in) but with a little more bass tightness and impact. (not so much quantity, just quality. or maybe a teeny weeny bit more. iono.)

i definitely recommend these headphones for any genre actually (except classical. i found classical lacking)

one star off for comfort issues with glasses.

wish they were shallow, around-ear headphones. also, might be worth mentioning that you can bend the angled part of the headband and make it straight, which makes them MUCH more wearable in public. if you dont, they stick out from your head. afterwards, some people say if sits better on their ears, and the headband is closer to your head. sorry if this is too long, just trying to describe them =P

it can show pretty good sound , especially for the songstress.
Personally, I like the bass more. It is the best one I have used.

4Great quality, great priceApr 19, 2010
I was foolish enough to buy the Sony MDR-NC6 about 3 years ago, and I've been complacent with them up until now. Not the greatest sound and they were cheap, but they did the job. How much did I pay? $60. I upgraded to the ATH-ES7 for only a price difference of $20 and I'm over-joyed with the quality. I can hear things more nicely, and they look fantastic. They're sleek and light, and there's nice quality feel to them; they feel pretty solid. I've had these for about 2 months now and surprisingly, I haven't gotten any scratches on the sides, despite it being very prone to scratches. My only complaint is that about after an hour of use, my ears get sore. The cushion isn't padded as much as I'd like, and even the top of the headband starts to hurt my head as well. I should also add in that I was choosing between these and the Beats by Dre. I haven't heard the Beats personally, but I know they leak a ton despite having good sound quality. But honestly, for the price of the Beats for $350 and the price of these for around $80, the better deal is here. Sure, the Beats sound quality might be a little better, but price just doesn't amount to it.
